Chinese Symbol for The Metal Element

The Metal Element supports breathing...inspiration and respiration--the breath of life--as well as the release of impurities.  Out with the old and in with the new.

The two officials of the Metal Element, the Lung and the Large Intestine, are responsible for the intake of breath, the pure, positive Chi ("HA" in Hawaiian) and the outflow of waste products.

The Metal Element corresponds to the season of autumn.  This is when the riches of decay reenter the Earth and return everything of quality to the soil.  Without this enrichment, the process of letting go and the furthering of life cannot occur.  This is expressed as the emotion of grief which is associated with the Metal Element.  Therefore, if a person cannot or will not "let go," life cannot move on with quality and integrity.

Imbalance of the Metal Element may result in disease states such as bronchitis, some types of asthma, pneumonia, skin disease (the skin is the third lung), intestinal difficulties like diverticulitis, diarrhea, constipation, etc.
